Vespa Radar helps beekeepers and volunteers find nests of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina). Hornets carry small radio tags; phones running the Vespa Radar app listen for them and report where they were heard. This policy explains what the Vespa Radar Android app and the website https://vespa.leef-consulting.ch collect, why, and what your rights are.

What the app collects
Only while you have switched scanning on, the app records and sends to the server:
- the radio tags it hears: tag number, signal strength, time and the tag's data (such as temperature)
- the phone's position (GPS) at that moment and its accuracy, also with the screen off; and, every 20 seconds, where the phone was listening, even when it hears no tag
- a random number the app creates when it is installed, the phone name you choose, and the app version
- the internet (IP) address each upload comes from
The app does not collect your name, phone number, contacts, photos, accounts, advertising identifier or the phone's hardware numbers, and collects nothing while scanning is off. Data recorded without network stays on the phone until it can be sent.
Why
- to show on a shared map where tagged hornets were heard, and estimate where their nest is
- to show the organisers which phones are taking part and working
- to protect the service against misuse (access keys, limits per phone and address)
Legal basis
You choose to install the app, to join a radar with a code and to start scanning; you can stop scanning or uninstall the app at any time. The processing follows the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, for people in the EU, the GDPR (consent, art. 6(1)(a)).
Who sees the data
The organisers of the radar and the people they give an account to see the map, including detections with their positions and phone names. The map is visible to everyone only if the organisers decide to publish it. The data is not sold and not shared with advertisers. The hosting provider stores it on our behalf.
Where the data is stored
On the server of this website, hosted by Kreativmedia, Switzerland. Connections between the app, the website and the server are encrypted (HTTPS).
How long
Detections and positions are kept as long as the project needs them to locate nests. Data of a phone is deleted on request, or when the organisers remove the phone.
This website
The website sets one cookie, only to keep you logged in; there is no tracking and no analytics. To show the map, your browser loads map images from OpenStreetMap (tile.openstreetmap.org), fonts from Google Fonts and program libraries from unpkg.com and cdnjs.cloudflare.com; these services receive your IP address.
Your rights
Write to lino@leef-consulting.ch to:
- know what data about your phone is stored
- have it corrected or deleted (give the phone name shown in the app, menu → Connection)
- withdraw your consent: stop scanning or uninstall the app; data already sent is deleted on request
- complain to the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) or your country's data protection authority
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page.
